Why do we have an inner critic?

That voice inside your head isn't actually a bully -- it's terrified of the very real possibility that you will fail, and it's doing whatever it can to keep you safe...

...but it doesn't have the whole story. Your inner critic literally believes that failure will lead to death and destruction, which is why its pull is so strong. It's not your job to cast it aside and push it down (that will only make it stronger). No, your job is to tell it a new story. Your fears are valid, but they're not all that matter in this adventure, and they don't get to dictate your choices. So, let's give your inner critic a few more insights that will help it feel secure.

The problem with relying on planning is you feel totally helpless when those plans fail -- luckily, creativity is your best friend when it comes to muddling your way through a scary situation. The most important thing to remember is that, no matter what, you have exactly what you need to take one more step forward. Goals become overwhelming when the jump seems too big to do in one leap, which is why your penchant for planning actually comes in handy here. Break that big thing into smaller pieces, until you have one small enough that you know you can do it. And remember -- no matter how many plans fall through, you always have what you need to take it in stride and make another choice.

The thing about maps is they provide so much comfort. When you know exactly where you’re going and how to get there, you never have to worry or be afraid. But the downside of certainty is that it leaves no room for wonder. You know that feeling of being completely taken by surprise in the best way, the kind of awe-inspiring miracle that takes your breath away? Those moments wouldn’t be nearly as potent if you knew what was going to happen. Creativity relies on those moments of wonder as fuel, and that’s why uncertainty and creativity go hand-in-hand. It’s good to have a plan, but at some point, you have to surrender to the fact that you don’t know what’s going to happen next -- and that’s a good thing.

At the core of debilitating anxiety is an inability to face scary things head-on for fear of failure or destruction. Instead of doing the thing, we worry about the thing and call it preparation. Let me be the voice you need to hear right now: You can do scary things. Yes, it’s terrifying. Yes, you might fail. Yes, failing might hurt. And. You can still do it. It might be messy, and not how you imagined it. It might take you longer than you thought, or more tries than you hoped for. Fear might be yelling in your ear the whole time. And. You can do scary things.

My name is Kolbie, and before discovering the magic of watercolor, I was a proud (and miserable) capital "P" Perfectionist.

In 2016, I was working in the White House (dream job, anyone?) and felt like a complete fraud -- the weight of my perfectionism was slowly crushing my confidence. Kind of on a whim, I picked up calligraphy and watercolor, and now, five years later, my life has turned upside-down in the best way. I went from insecure political writer to confident author, artist, and online educator. I've helped thousands of people worldwide unlock the power of their creativity, and I'm not stopping yet.

BEFORE WE GET TOO FAR INTO THIS...

Hello there!

Follow a tutorial to create a piece you really like. Then, recreate the piece without the tutorial to guide you. You may hit a few snags along the way, instances where you forget what comes next. This is where you say: I have what I need to take another step. You piece will likely be different from the original, and that’s the point. You don’t need a map to make your journey beautiful.

Think about all of the truly awe-inspiring moments in your life, the ones that took your breath away. What made them so magical? Write about that sense of wonder in your journal, then use those memories and feelings to create a piece of art that reflects the wonder you felt. Having something tangible to help you remember the beauty that comes from uncertainty will help in challenging moments ahead.

Give yourself just 15 minutes to create something, with no plan beforehand. This exercise will challenge you to think on your feet and act without much preparation. The first time you try it, you might spend the whole 15 minutes just thinking and stewing. That’s ok! You’ll soon realize that in order to make it work, you just need to take a step, then another, then another, not worrying about how messy or imperfect it is along the way. You probably won’t make a masterpiece, but you’ll learn a lot and build up an important muscle: Courage.

Watercolor can help you slow down and discover a new story

I was a Perfectionist through and through until I discovered watercolor. Diving into a creative practice provided a gentle way to retrain my thoughts, create moments of wonder, and build a life-changing sense of confidence and self-compassion.

I can't do the work for you, but I can de-mystify the "how" behind watercolor so you can jump straight to using it to build a healthy creative mindset and more magical life.
